Middle managers have been a major target for layoffs in the past year
Layoffs that occurred in 2023 heavily targeted middle managers, with middle managers making up over thirty-one percent of cuts. The significant layoffs have decreased the confidence and outlook that middle managers hold regarding their futures at their companies. Middle managers have also faced various issues in the workplace in recent years, such as increases in workload, uncertainty regarding remote work, and burnout. Various major companies have cut numerous levels of management, including Meta and Mark Zuckerberg publicly announced that managers managing other managers reduced efficiency and the company would be reducing these types of employees. Salesforce also reduced the number of managers in its workforce this past year. McKinsey, a top consulting firm, has expressed opposition to these changes, stating that middle managers are crucial for productivity, and their role of connecting and integrating different workers for tasks is essential for maintaining efficiency.
