Millions 'to lose textile jobs'
In a new report by Christian Aid, the charity warns that millions of the poorest Third World textile workers will lose their jobs when the World Trade Organization (WTO) ends its Multi-Fiber Agreement (MFA) at midnight on December 31st. The WTO has been gradually phasing out quotas in order to bring textile trading agreements in line with global free trade regulations. Many of the countries that originally supported the WTO policy now fear that China, which became a WTO member in 2001, will overwhelm the market.
