Minimum wage battle heats up in Michigan, US
A joint effort between civil rights and labor groups has formed a committee on Monday that will push for raising Michigan?s minimum wage. The coalition has stated that they will seek to raise both the tipped minimum wage and the regular hourly minimum wage. Many of the state?s prominent Democratic lawmakers have voiced their support for the movement, some calling for minimums as high as $9.25 per hour. In Michigan, fewer than 25% of the minimum wage earners are teenagers, ?many are the breadwinners? said Michigan State AFL-CIO President Karla Swift. Michigan is not alone in efforts to increase the minimum wage, at least 29 other states have or will introduce similar measures and President Obama has stated that he would like to see the federal minimum wage increased to $10.10 per hour.
