Mining vacation gold at Massport
Approximately one-third of the employees at Massport, the public agency that operates Logan International Airport, participate in a program that allows them to 'sell back' up to 3 weeks of unused vacation time. Both union and management employees take advantage of the benefit, with the Executive Director of the agency receiving an extra $15,875 in extra compensation. Because the money is counted as regular salary, it also has the effect of increasing the eventual pensions of those involved. Very few other public agencies in Massachusetts offer this type of benefit, and none to the level here. Massport was previously criticized for and forced to roll back a similar benefit involving sick time.
