Missouri Toyota plant publicly announces union organization efforts
Workers at a Toyota plant in Troy, Missouri have publicly declared that they are seeking union representation from the United Auto Workers Union. Over thirty percent of workers signed union cards in support of unionization, and the plant is the first Toyota factory in the United States to publicly state their intention to unionize. The Toyota plant employs around one thousand workers and produces aluminum cylinder heads. Aluminum cylinder heads are a key part of a vehicle’s engine, and the plant produces aluminum cylinder heads for all Toyota engines in the United States. Workers state that they are organizing because they are seeking stricter safety standards and increases in wages. Hourly worker wages at the Toyota plant are around four dollars lower than the new wages at the Big Three Automakers, despite Toyota earning higher revenue than the other automotive companies.
