Mitsubishi plant rallies from near-extinction
Operating under new leadership and a new mission statement that places top priority on respect for employees and coworkers, the Mitsubishi plant in Normal, Illinois has come a long way since it settled multi-million dollar lawsuits over charges of past instances of sexual harassment and racial discrimination in 1998 and 2001, respectively. Once infamous for the blatant and pervasive humiliation and verbal abuse of female employees, the plant was cited in a 2001 Equal Employment Opportunity Commission report as going far beyond state and federal law in its efforts to address complaints of discrimination and harassment. In addition to the priority attached to respect, and its zero tolerance policy in cases of harassment and discrimination, the factory has set up a department whose sole duty is to investigate employee complaints, and has implemented regular anti-discrimination and anti-harassment training for employees.
