MLB initiates a lockout after failing to reach an agreement with the MLBPA
Major League Baseball has commenced a lockout of their players, for the first time since 1990, following the expiration of their current labor agreement at 11:59pm on Wednesday. After months of unsuccessful talks between MLB and the Players Association, both parties have found proposal changes unsatisfactory. MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said he believes the lockout is “the best mechanism to protect the 2022 season.” The MLBPA said in a statement that the lockout is “a dramatic measure, regardless of the timing” and was “specifically calculated to pressure players into relinquishing rights and benefits.”
