More than 2 million workers strike in Indonesia, protesting low wages and contract workers
Over two million Indonesian workers staged a one-day strike on Wednesday. The workers were protesting the hiring of contract workers, and demanding higher wages and benefits. Current laws allow companies to hire temporary employees without benefits, despite the fact that a court ruled that hiring temporary workers is unconstitutional. The government says that it is still revising the law in response to the ruling. Workers are asking for an increase in the minimum wage, health insurance and social security. Indonesian factory workers make about $120 a month.
