Most unionized UC hospital workers go to jobs despite strike
Despite the imminent patient care workers strike at five University of California medical centers, hospital administrators reported that 75% of union workers showed up for their shifts Tuesday. Replacement workers hired in anticipation of the strike led to overstaffing at both the UC Davis and UC Irvine centers when most employees chose to come to work. Unionized jobs include pharmacy technicians, respiratory therapists, and nursing assistants. Picketing workers expressed concern over such issues as pension reform and understaffing. UC officials expressed hope that the union would return to the bargaining table to discuss their concerns.
