Movie Visual Effects Business in Turmoil, Artists Consider Union
Movie visual effects artists are considering organizing a union to help address problems in their industry. About 500 artists protested outside of the Academy Awards in February in an attempt to bring attention to the lack of benefits, overtime and hob insecurity that they have. Layoffs at some video effects studios have prompted workers to go public with conditions in their industry, as well as what they see as an often overlooked contribution to movies. Video effects workers are the last major group of Hollywood workers that are not unionized.
