MPD?s ?All Hands on Deck? in doubt after board ruling
In 2007, D.C.'s Metropolitan Police Department Chief Cathy Lanier started "AHODs," which are three day periods where all police officers are required to work three 8-hour shifts. In 2009, an arbitrator ruled that the AHODs were breaking several provisions of the police officer union's contracts. Lanier publicly vowed in 2009 to continue the AHODs and has until the present day. The union eventually appealed to the Public Employees Relations Board, and the board has upheld the arbitrator's decision. The costs to the city may be anywhere from $1.5m to $4.3m in backpaid overtime fees per AHOD weekend.
