Multnomah County is losing jobs even as state job growth hits nearly 5,000
From June 2024 to June 2025, Multnomah County, Oregon’s most populous county and home to Portland, lost about 5,000 jobs—mainly in construction and manufacturing. This 1% decline came even as the state overall added around 4,700 jobs, with growth concentrated in Marion and Polk Counties. Portland still lags behind pre-pandemic employment levels, unlike the rest of Oregon. Healthcare saw gains in the county, but not enough to offset losses in other sectors.
