Musicians in the Philadelphia Orchestra have approved potential strike action
Musicians employed by the Philadelphia Orchestra successfully voted to authorize strike action earlier this week. The musicians are represented by the American Federation of Musicians, and unionized musicians will take strike action if a new contract can not be reached with the Philadelphia Orchestra Kimmel Center. Workers are demanding increased wages to match the salaries of musicians in other orchestras around the country, as well as improved retirement benefits, greater pay for freelance musicians, and better scheduling protections. The Philadelphia Orchestra Kimmel Center has not approved measures to meet these demands and the union states that management has failed to address the needs of its musicians. Contract negotiations will continue until September 10th, and strike action will not occur if a deal is reached before the deadline.
