N.Y.U. Graduate Assistants to Join Auto Workers? Union
The American Arbitration Association has announced that the graduate and research assistants at N.Y.U. have overwhelmingly voted to unionize as an affiliate of the United Automobile Workers. The 1,247 students have started the only union recognized by a private university in the U.S. The vote may have been so lopsided toward unionization because the IAM had gotten N.Y.U. to sign a neutrality agreement and so there was no official campaign against the unionization of the graduate students. The graduate students plan to push for improved health care after seeing their premiums jump last year.
