Navy Pier security guards strike over new contractor
The security guards of Navy Pier, a popular Chicago tourist destination, went on strike Thursday in protest of the new security contractor’s plans that may replace security guards for lesser paid workers. Teamsters Local 727, the union representing the security guards, claims that new contractor Allied Universal has ignored the current collective bargaining agreement. The union alleges that Allied Universal will downsize current union positions by 90%, and outsource the rest of the staff for $13 an hour. Teamsters has filed an unfair labor practice charge against the contractor with the NLRB.
