ndonesia asks Saudis to extend deadline for undocumented workers
Indonesian officials have asked Saudi Arabia to extend a July 3 amnesty deadline for undocumented workers. Officials are skeptical that they will be able to help an estimated 200,000 remaining workers rectify their immigration status before the deadline, though the consulate is processing passports 20 hours a day and at least 124,000 undocumented workers have already left the country since April 1. Protests broke out among frustrated workers waiting outside the consulate Sunday during which a woman died from head exhaustion. After the July 3 deadline expires, Saudi authorities will begin a crackdown that will arrest and jail undocumented workers.
