Nearly a third of Japan's women 'sexually harassed at work'
Sexual harassment occurs to 30% of Japanese working women, with over 50% reporting comments dealing with appearance, age, and physical features, according to a government study that was the first of its kind. The survey queried 9,600 women between the ages of 25 and 44 who were currently working or had been previously employed. 40% had been touched “in an unpleasant way” while 17% reported being “asked to have a sexual relationship”. 63% of the women reported a reluctance to report the problem, with 10% indicating that they had been treated unfairly or demoted. The study deals a blow to the country’s efforts to increase the number of working women as well as the number of female executives to 30% of leadership positions by 2020.
