New bill introduced to the Senate aimed at protecting US workers from employer surveillance in the workplace
In the US Senate, a new bill was recently announced aimed at protecting workers from invasive surveillance in the workplace. Since the pandemic, there has been increased awareness of how companies may spy on their workers using software tools, especially amidst remote work. One of the most pervasive instances of this has been employer-access to webcams, which is currently unregulated. If passed, the Stop Spying Bosses Act would require employers to disclose if they are monitoring their employees, prevent employers from collecting off-duty data, and establish a new division in the Department of Labor to oversee workplace surveillance technologies.
