Recent legislation passed by New Jersey Governor Murphy allows unions to represent employers or other parties in labor violation lawsuits. Unions will have the ability to file claims against companies regarding potential debt violations as well as unpaid wage claims in the construction industry. Governor Murphy stated that the new law will hopefully improve labor conditions for workers, but opponents of the bill have claimed that the legislation will negatively affect businesses. Companies are predicting an increase in the number of wage lawsuits filed by employees. Previously, employers seeking to file unpaid wage claims were represented by the State Commission of Labor and Workforce Development as well as a joint-labor management committee.
