New memorial honors workplace deaths
A National Workers Memorial will be constructed on the National Labor College campus near Washington D.C. The memorial, which should be completed by September, honors workers killed on the job ? a tragedy affecting roughly 5,000 employees per year. U.S. Labor Secretary Hilda Solis and union leaders will ?break ground? on the memorial today. The memorial will consist of a circular brick plaza with granite benches contributed by unions in honor of historic workplace tragedies. Individuals may buy bricks engraved with the name of a worker killed on the job. The memorial is expected to cost about $450,000 to built, with most of the funding come from donations.
