New Strike Paralyzes Greece
The most disruptive strike yet in an ongoing series of labor issues rocked Greece today as public services employees staged a general strike and a protest rally that turned ugly. Thousands of workers from Greece's two main labor unions protested in the protest measures today, unhappy with forced austerity measures, which plan to raise taxes and decrease public service employees' vacation pay by 30%. The transport workers strike shut down all international flights and trains today, as well as all subway, bus, and ferry transports. Trash collection halted for the sixth consecutive day, and tax offices and hospitals were forced to go to limited staff. Additionally, some 20,000 workers gathered in the capital to protest - an encounter between riot police and a group of extremist protesters led to several injuries, ten arrests, and substantial property damage.
