New York requires businesses to give workers annual wage notification, but doesn't check for compliance
As a New York State law requiring employers to provide employees with wage information enters its second year, some are questioning the law's use. Opponents to the law say that the Labor Department does not check if employers are complying with the law unless a worker files a complaint, which no one has done since the law went into effect. The rule is a part of the Wage Theft Prevention Act, which increased the consequences for not explaining or paying promised wages. The law was mainly aimed at immigrant and low-wage workers. Some state legislators are pushing for a repeal of the wage information requirement, saying it is a needless expense for businesses.
