New York’s Rockland Community College may begin to furlough workers or encourage early retirement to reduce large financial deficit
Rockland Community College, an educational institution in Suffern, New York, is experiencing a large structural deficit, and the deficit is estimated to be up to 3.4 million dollars. The community college administration has stated that no layoffs are planned, but it is considering various options such as voluntary separations, early retirements, and furloughs. Rockland Community College has experienced a steady trend of declining enrollment in the past several years but experienced an increase in enrollment this past year. The community college provides 2-year degree programs and also has a nursing school and culinary arts program. The institution focuses on preparing the students for the workforce, or to transition to four-year institutions. The community college will be renting out facilities, enrolling more students, and increasing workforce development partnerships with companies.
