Nigerian government announces wage increases and provisions to narrowly avoid government worker strike
A country-wide strike from Nigerian government workers that was scheduled to start this week has been halted. The government announced monthly wage increases for employees, as well as household stipend payments for the next three months. Nigerian government officials also stated that provisions will be provided for gas-powered buses to improve the country’s transportation system. The Nigeria Labor Congress, the main organization that represents various unions, will continue to negotiate with the Nigerian government, and the two parties are working towards creating and implementing measures to ease the economic hardship Nigerians are facing. Nigerians are facing financial challenges after the country’s new president, Bola Tinubu, implemented policies that have significantly increased inflation and living costs. Strike action by Nigerian government workers has been placed on hold for thirty days, and after this time period, workers will be able to strike if sufficient changes aren’t made.
