Nike Asks High Court to Overturn Ruling
Nike Inc. has filed papers with the U.S. Supreme Court asking them to review a California court ruling that allows Nike to be sued for false advertising because of the way it defended its third-world labor practices. The California Supreme Court held that Nike's statements in defense of its labor practices were commercial and not subject to protection as free speech. Nike argues that the ruling restricts businesses' First Amendment right to discuss public issues.
