NPR Points to Shortfall in Cutting 64 Positions
National Public Radio (NPR) announced plans yesterday to cancel two programs, reduce production expenses, eliminate 64 jobs, and leave 21 open positions vacant. Although the broadcast station is reaching 26.4 million listeners a week, it faces an expected $23 million revenue shortfall next year. NPR has lost millions in expected corporate sponsorships, grants, and contributions amid worsening economic conditions. 22 of the expected layoffs will affect employees on the to-be-cancelled shows "Day to Day" and "News & Notes".
