NUMMI workers in Fremont overwhelmingly approve shutdown agreement
The approval of a shutdown agreement between the New United Motor Manufacturing Inc. (Nummi) plant in Fremont, California and the United Auto Workers Local 2244 came in late last night. The plant shutdown, scheduled for April 1, was approved by a 90% majority of the 3,700 member local. The average severance pay provided by the agreement is $54,000, with the most senior employees receiving up to $68,000. The minimum amount is $21,175. This number attracted most of the heat from the 10% who voted against the agreement. 300 employees on disability leave, and some others, will receive the minimum amount. Although the agreement was approved there are still hard feelings among the workers, many of whom felt boxed in by GM and Toyota, with no other choice than to accept the negotiations.
