Nurses Accuse Hospital of Stalling Union Approval
Almost three weeks after a majority of the 518 registered nurses at Providence St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, California voted to join the Service Employees International Union according to union officials, the nurses rallied yesterday outside the hospital to protest alleged management stall tactics. Joined by actors from M*A*S*H and ER, the nurses lambasted the hospital for delaying National Labor Relations Board certification of the results and recognition of SEIU as their exclusive bargaining representative, by filing charges of union intimidation of workers and challenging five pro-union votes. Pointing out that it would have won the election even without the votes management has challenged, the union has offered to drop its challenge to fifty-one suspect anti-union votes, only to be turned down by management.
