NY governor signs domestic worker rights bill
New York State Governor David Paterson signed the first bill in the country that gives domestic workers extensive rights. The law will require overtime for nannies, housekeepers and companions for working more than 40 hours a week, and gives workers at least 24 consecutive hours off a week, as well as three paid days off annually. Sponsors of the bill say that it also contains provisions for employers to be subject to state law for sexual misconduct. The bill passed the State Senate on Thursday. The law also calls for the New York State Labor Department to examine working conditions and the feasibility of collective bargaining for a report due on November 1.
