NY Times employees go on strike to protest contract disagreements between the union and company
On Thursday, more than 1,000 New York Times employees participated in a 24-hour strike action in response to contract disagreements between the newspaper company and the union. Journalists represented by the NewsGuild of New York have stated that the company has not bargained in good faith nor met their demands, while the Times has argued its proposed contract included significant pay and benefit increases. Contract negotiations have been occurring for over a year, and despite efforts to resolve the labor dispute, the online Zoom format of the negotiations has led to an escalation of frustrations. This strike marks the first labor action to occur at the Times in decades, and participating workers have called on readers of the newspaper to demonstrate solidarity by not utilizing NYT platforms for the day.
