NYC cabbies are on a hunger strike
New York City taxi drivers have staged a weekslong hunger strike outside of City Hall. The strike which began on October 20th is a demand on mayor Bill de Blasio to use city money to cap their debt at $145,000. The drivers claim they are plagued by massive debts after being misled into taking on loans with inflated costs mixed with the explosive growth of Uber. Several prominent labor unions like the SEIU and the Teamsters have signed on in support of the driver’s demands and call for the city to guarantee each individual driver's debt. The mayor objects to this proposal saying that the city has already given out millions of dollars to help drivers achieve low monthly payments.
