NYC gig workers impacted by the pandemic
During the pandemic, New Yorkers relied heavily on gig workers which led to gig workers experiencing increased health and financial issues. According to a survey of workers, app-based services pay less than half of New York City's minimum wage of $15 an hour to workers who say it is not enough to pay their rent or other expenses. While there have been many legislative attempts to no longer classify gig workers as independent contractors, some workers feel this would not address the issue.
