Oakland Public Employment Relations Board sides with unionized teachers on controversial strike action ruling
A recent ruling by the Public Employment Relations Board in Oakland determined that a controversial teachers’ strike that occurred in 2022 was legal. Teachers in Oakland, represented by the Oakland Education Association, went on strike after the school district shut down various campuses due to budget cuts. The Oakland Unified School District board and the Oakland Education Association filed claims against each other, and the state labor board ruled in favor of the union. The ruling stated that the district shut down the schools without bargaining with the Oakland Education Association first, and this meant that the teacher strike was legal. The union also went on strike in 2023 over a disagreement with the school district board regarding social justice issues, and the two parties reached a settlement regarding the strike action.
