Oakland teachers' union puts off one-day strike
Members of the Oakland, California teachers' union announced yesterday that a twenty-four hour strike scheduled for the end of this month has been moved back to April 22, because of a crucial missing report. The union and the Oakland Education Association have been in contract negotiations for over two years, unable to come to an agreement on a number of issues, including pay raises, a proposal to increase class sizes, and rumors of staff reductions in the adult education program. The fact-finding report that is missing is needed for the strike to be considered legal, and will not be available until the end of March or perhaps even early April. As such, the teachers' union has rescheduled their one-day strike, originally slated for March 24, to the later date, April 22.
