On May Day, Protesters Take to the Streets Nationwide
Protesters across the United States marched yesterday in a general strike for women, immigrants, and workers. Planned by both labor and immigrant’s rights activists, the Labor Day march aimed to convey the connection between unauthorized immigrants and the workforce. While in Portland, Oregon the protest was shut down by police following protesters throwing rocks, smoke bombs, and cans of Pepsi at officers, most of the marches were peaceful and highly attended. Many workers forfeited their day’s pay to attend the protest, and others shared concern about what their employer’s reactions would be on Tuesday.
