Opera Singers in Welsh National Opera call off strike action planned for end of September
Opera singers in Wales were set to strike on September 21st and September 29th, but the singers have now called off the planned strike action. The singers are a part of the Welsh National Opera and are represented by the Equity Wales union. There are thirty singers in the Welsh National Opera, and all of them are union members. The singers perform with the Welsh National Opera Orchestra, who are represented by the Musicians’ Union. The planned strike action was in response to proposed wage cuts and layoffs. The proposed changes are due to a significant decrease in the amount of public funding for the Welsh National Opera. The union stated that discussions over the past week were constructive, and have called off the strike action, but singers and musicians will still be demonstrating on the opening night of their performance of Rigoletto. The union is also still set to strike on October 11th if a contract agreement isn’t reached by then.
