OSHA plans to make workplace safety reports public
New regulation would require companies with more than 250 employees to file regular reports on workplace illness and injury reports. OSHA believes that the reports will place greater pressure on companies to be safer and make it easier for the public to identify the employers with the best, and worst, records. At least 38,000 U.S. companies would have to file the reports, and possibly upwards of 478,000 companies because the regulation also calls for employers with 20 or more employees who operate in hazardous industries to also file the injury reports. All of the reports will be posted online and select data will be compiled in the Bureau of Labor Statistics annual report. The regulation is still in the proposal stage and a public hearing is scheduled for January 9th.
