Pa. labor unions fill state Capitol Rotunda in defense of union rights
A bill in the Pennsylvania Legislature would restrict unions from collecting dues through payroll deduction. The labor movement in the state has reacted swiftly and strongly, filling the Capitol Rotunda and giving speeches while the bill is debated in the State House and Senate. Over a thousand union members, including police officers, teachers, metal workers, and electricians, to protest what they see as the first move in an attack to take away workers? rights. The Governor, Tom Corbett, has shown support for the bill to ?remove the administrative burden? from employers, which is one of the reasons labor leaders in Pennsylvania feel that the bill must be killed before it reaches the Governor?s desk. There was a small counter-protest contingency in support of the bill.
