Payroll deduction law challenged by unions
Michigan unions have filed a lawsuit in federal court against a new law that forbids dues deduction for school employees. The unions say that the law violated the 1st Amendment, and that it was passed to punish employees for defending collective bargaining. Implementation of the bill has already been delayed for a year due to procedural errors by the legislature. Unions are also arguing that the law violates the 14th Amendment by applying only to school employees. Legislators say that it is not appropriate for schools to collect dues for unions.
