Pentagon workers' furloughs shortened to 6 days
Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel announced that furloughs for defense workers will be shortened to six days. Hagel said that the reductions were made possible after savings where found elsewhere in the military budget. Additionally, the ongoing withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan has freed up money in the budget to pay for defense personnel. Initially after sequester budget cuts took effect, Defense Department officials estimated that civilian employees would have to take as many as 22 furlough days.
