Percentage of unionized US workers decreased in 2023, despite large increase in union membership
Over one hundred thousand American workers joined unions over the past year, as union activity has been on the rise in the United States. Despite the large increase in unionized workers, data from the United States Department of Labor show that the percentage of unionized workers in the country decreased in 2023. This decrease can largely be attributed to a significant increase in non-union jobs over the past year. Trends suggest that many younger workers are joining unions, and as younger individuals continue to join the workforce, union membership is predicted to increase. Unions are also becoming more popular to the American public, and this is most likely due to the historical union wins this year, such as the United Auto Workers' new contracts with the Big 3 automakers.
