Peru to Declare Mines Strike Illegal, Pinilla Says
Miners will be forced to return to work or lose their jobs after the government of Peru declared their two-day old strike illegal, according to Labor Minister Susana Pinilla. Workers had struck in an effort to improve pensions, profit-sharing and rights for "subcontracted workers", halting production in copper and gold mines across the country. The government has charged that union leaders are jeopardizing the welfare of their members for political purposes, thus rendering the strike illegal.
