Piedmont Gardens lays off 38 striking workers
After a five day strike, 38 employees of an assisted living facility in Oakland, California were laid off. The group included the union bargaining team and some shop stewards. Around 150 employees participated in the strike, which was over disciplinary procedures, pensions and health care costs. An attorney for the employer said that the workers were not laid off, but did not have a place at the time. The workers are represented by Service Employees International Union United Healthcare Workers West, and have been bargaining since February. Their contract expired in April and the attorney for the employer said that no bargaining sessions were scheduled. A spokesman for the SEIU-UHW said that they are considering filing a complaint with the National labor Relations Board.
