Pittsburgh City Counsel Pens Letter to Ellis School About Labor Dispute
The Pittsburgh City Council wrote a letter to the Ellis School on Monday, criticizing the decision to hire a custodial company that pays its’ cleaning staff less than $200 a week after taxes. The Ellis School had formerly employed workers represented by the Service Employees International Union 32BJ, who filed a complaint with the National Labor Relations Board on August 8 claiming that the private school refused to rehire them because of union membership. Union officials say that the contract employees hired as replacements are paid around $5 less an hour, with no benefits.
