Platinum Union to End Strike as Members Accept Pay Offer
Today members of the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union in South Africa accepted the latest offer by the world?s three largest platinum companies. The action ends a five-month strike that has been both the longest and costliest in South Africa?s history. The agreement includes significant pay increases and improved work rules regarding overtime as well as reinstating 236 workers who had lost their jobs due to their involvement in protests that had turned violent. Although, pay for all union members had increased significantly, the union?s president said that job cuts will continue to be an issue.
