Political group connected to the Nevada State Education Association expresses opposition to the use of tax dollars to fund a new stadium for the Oakland Athletics
The Oakland Athletics, a professional baseball team in the Major League Baseball League, is seeking to build a new stadium in Las Vegas, and taxpayer dollars would be used to fund construction. A political group associated with the Nevada State Education Association has filed a lawsuit against the proposal. The new stadium would use $380 million of public funding from the state government, and the group and the teacher’s union stated that these funds could be better used to improve public education. Nevada is one of the lowest-ranked states in the United States in regard to public education, and has large class sizes and high teacher vacancies. The relocation of the Oakland Athletics to Las Vegas would make it the third sports team in recent years to make Las Vegas home. The Oakland Raiders, a professional football team in the National Football League, moved to Las Vegas in 2020. The Las Vegas Raiders, a professional hockey team in the National Hockey League, was a new expansion team in the league that was founded in 2017.
