Port hiring dispute intensifies, even as more hires are authorized
Hundreds of members of the International Longshoremen?s Association held a rally on Thursday condemning the Waterfront Commission of New York Harbor?s delays in allowing employers to hire. Employers who belong to the New York Shipping Association are growing more impatient at the Commission?s inability to open up the necessary openings so business can continue. Also on Thursday, the Waterfront Commission started clearing the red tape from the first positions so that hiring could begin, six months after the hiring plan was proposed. The delay can only partially be blamed on the Commission as a lawsuit that objects to the Commission?s new role in hiring at the port tied up the Waterfront Commission?s resources since November when it was filed by the union and the employer association in November.
