Portland is experiencing school closures as teachers go on strike
Teachers in Portland, Oregon represented by the Portland Association of Teachers, went on strike starting last week, and have continued strike action to demand for increased wages and better school infrastructure and resources. The teacher strike has resulted in school closures and over 45,000 students have been affected by class cancellations. Teachers are also calling for increases in staff, which would make it easier to provide support to students with learning disabilities and special needs. Many parents in Portland have shown up to the strikes and have written letters supporting striking teachers. The Portland public school superintendents state that the state doesn’t provide enough funding to meet the union’s demands, and the school doesn’t have record profits to use to raise salaries and increase school resources.
