Pratt, Machinists Union Consider Future Work As Contract Talks Start
The IAM, representing about 3,000 employees in Hartford, will begin talks with Pratt & Whitney, a division of the United Technologies Corporation concerning the soon to expire contract and future jobs is guaranteed to take center stage. The union has already advised its members to do Christmas shopping early and start saving to reduce leverage that the company may try to exercise over them. The company had made a statement about the global trend in the aerospace industry toward leaner production. UTC is already beginning to implement 3-D printing at select plants which has drastically cut the number of man hours needed to produce certain parts. The discussion is almost sure to be fierce because the number of engines needed to fill the growing demand for Lockheed Martin?s F-35 ensures Pratt & Whitney will have more work in the near future, but the company can put that work in any of several locations.
