Pratt union to fight for Conn. jobs
The Machinists Union at Pratt & Whitney in Connecticut responded aggressively after the company announced several potential shutdowns, saying that they would fight to keep the jobs. Pratt & Whitney, a subsidiary of United Technologies, Co., which employs about 12,000 Connecticut workers, announced Tuesday that second quarter profit losses have forced them to consider the shutdown of one Connecticut plant, and the scaling-back of another - about 1,000 jobs in total are in jeopardy. While analysts have praised Pratt's cost-cutting measures, the union has accused the company of giving up, and 'abandoning ship.' The company has said that they are willing to meet with the machinists, and are open to discussing any alternative measures the union might have in mind.
